Spelling Bee

Dear Parents and Staff,

We are going to still have our spelling bee this year in a covid-19 safe manner. Scripps and the Union Leader will provide additional information about the state spelling bee.

There will be classroom spelling bees after the long weekend (no school 1/18/21). Cohort B finalists will then compete on 1/22 and Cohort A finalists will compete on 1/25.  The final winner of Cohort A and the final winner of Cohort B will compete (details to follow) to determine who will represent AES at the state level.

Click Level One to view list One words.

Click Level Two to view list Two words.

Good luck and we look forward to a robust 2021 spelling bee!

Message From Mrs. Kruger 1/2/21

Dear Parent/Guardian:

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your family!

We look forward to welcoming back your student(s) next week. Below are some notes and  information to help you prepare for the return to school.

I hope you got to see the announcement from 12/23 sharing the exciting news that we are the recipient of a $1600.00 music grant from the NHCF and a $10,000.00 Nurturing Neighbor grant from Shaw’s. We can’t wait to research and implement programs for students and families. We also hope to hear very soon from the NH Dept. of Education on where Allenstown ranks for state building aide towards a possible new K-8 school project. Stay tuned for updates!

Shannon Kruger, ASD Principal

  1. Monday and Tuesday are Cohort A days.  Cohort B returns on Wednesday.
  2. If your family traveled outside of New England over the holiday, you are a close contact to a positive case, or your student has tested positive, please reach out to Mrs. Brison to confirm your quarantine dates so you know when it will be safe for your child to return to school. You can email Mrs. Brison at [email protected] .
  3. Your student will begin with a new unified arts class next week.
  4. If your student wants to play in the snow, please make sure they come to school with boots, snow pants, coat, hat, and gloves. If you need assistance with winter clothing, please reach out to Mrs. Douzanis, School counselor or Mrs. Brison, School Nurse [email protected] or [email protected]
  5. If your student wears boots to school, please also send along a pair of shoes for the student to wear during the day.
  6. Click January menus for breakfast and lunch menus.
  7. Attendance reminder – Parents can call out their student 5 days each year. Absences after those 5 days require documentation or they are considered unexcused absences. Once a student has 5 unexcused absences, they are considered habitually truant according to the State of NH definition.  School begins at 8:10. If a student arrives anytime after 8:10, they are considered tardy. If you have any questions, please email Shannon Kruger or Sarah Petersons.
  8. Remote VLACS Students – Mrs. Petersons will be doing a progress check early next week to make sure all students have a VLACS unified arts class and that every student has requested or has begun their academic classes. As of today, all elementary classes are open (with the exception of a couple grade 2 sections). If you need assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Petersons at [email protected]. The shop will be set up as a display only this year and kids will put in orders. The PTO will be fulfilling the orders a couple days later. We are very grateful to the PTO for going the extra mile to provide this for all of our students.

Message From The PTO

AES FAMILIES:

The PTO will be hosting the annual Holiday Shoppe next week for students of AES! (Information and envelopes were sent home this week)

Due to the current circumstances the shoppe will look a little different this year; students will visit the shop and view a display of items and be able to place orders that will be filled by the PTO and returned to the school later in the week (payment is due at the time the student visits shop)

The Holiday Shoppe will be running Tuesday and Wednesday (12/8 and 12/9; one day for each cohort).

There will also be a shopping time for elementary students currently enrolled in the school district who are full-time remote learning this year. These students are welcome to visit AES between 1:00-2:30 Thursday 12/10 (parents will need to wait outside while their student shops)!

The PTO will be present during all shopping times to help students with placing their orders.

Students have truly enjoyed being able to shop for their loved ones independently in prior years and we are excited to be able to offer this again this year.

Please reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions!

Message From Mrs. Kruger 10/23/20

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope your family has had a great weekend and here is some information for next week.

10/26 is a Cohort B Monday Cohort B does have 3 Monday’s in a row due to Veteran’s Day.

Shannon Kruger and the Allenstown Administrative Team

1. BROWN BUS – Monday will be the regular morning schedule. Tuesday -Friday will be the delayed schedule. If you have questions please contact DAIL Transportation at 736-9682

2. On 10/29 (cohort A) and 10/30 (cohort B) there will be a Halloween Parade in the school. Due to the current covid-19 situation we will not be able to welcome parents/guests for the parade. Students can bring their costume to school and change after lunch for the parade. Students will be participating in other Fall activities with their teachers. One of the most exciting things is that both cohorts for each class have collaborated to design and create their own scarecrow. We will be putting them on display in front of the school on Monday to share with the entire community.

3. FOOD and SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS- The following is important information from Mrs. Brison:

Parents who wish to send in prepackaged treats must read the labels to make sure the item doesn’t contain nuts and look for a clause that states”processed in a plant that contains nuts.” If those items are brought into school they cannot be given to our students.

No baked goods are allowed homemade or store bought at a bakery so please do not send them in. Dunkin Donuts munchkins are made in a plant that contains nuts along with every product that Dunkin Donuts sells.

All items must come in a sealed bag/package by the manufacturer with the label of ingredients on the outside.

To make things easier I suggest you reserve the “Party Items” that our Food Service Director Tasha Ball is offering as those are guaranteed safe for all classrooms. Click to view Party Snacks Order Form.

We want our students to have a fun celebration and do it Safely.
Thank you for your cooperation ! Have a Spooktacular Halloween!

Message From Mrs. Kruger 10/4/20

Dear Parent/Guardian:

It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of October! Remember…tomorrow, Monday, 10/5 is a cohort B day.

Here is some news, information, reminders, and important dates for AES:

1. Our website has a new look. Check it out! http://asd.sau53.org/

1. Many classes have been taking advantage of the outdoor tent and other outdoor spaces and the weather has been very cooperative. We are going to leave the spaces set-up for as long as possible. Students should dress for the weather.

2. Students are encouraged to wear our school colors(green and white) on Thursday for cohort A and Friday for cohort B. Students waring school colors earn a “spirit eagle buck”. They will be able to spend their eagle bucks on activities and prizes.

3. Students do have assignments for the days that they are engaged in independent learning at home. If a student returns to school and has not completed any work and there has been no communication from the parent, the student will be marked absent for the day they were home.

4. Free lunch for all students has been extended for the rest of the 20-21 school year. If you are a family that would normally benefit from the free lunch program, you are still encouraged to complete the application. If your application is done, then any change in programming would not interrupt benefits for your student(s).

5. School Pictures are scheduled for 10/13 (cohort A) and 10/14 (cohort B). We will be looking at a timeframe for students that are remote to come in for pictures. The time has not yet been determined.

6. Since all NH students missed state testing last spring, the State of NH is having all students in grades 4-8 take an interim assessment in October. They are having students take the test from one grade below their current grade. For example, a 4th grade student would take a 3rd grade test. The purpose of the test is to help staff determine instructional goals and for the state to determine the impact of remote learning on students. Our 4th grade students will test in reading, math, writing. We will share the test schedule once it is set.

7. The drop off and pick up procedures are working pretty well. Things feel safer and afternoon pick up goes quickly. Thank you for your patience and assistance while we made these shifts.

8. This is a reminder that the bell rings at 8:10. If your student arrives after 8:10, then they are considered tardy. In addition, parents are able to call out their student 5 times a year. Absences after those 5 days require appropriate documentation or they are considered “unexcused”. The state of NH defines habitual truancy as having 5 or more full days of unexcused absences. Please get notes for the office anytime you take your student to a medical or dental appointment. This helps us keep the most accurate attendance records.

9. If your student has a device, please help to make sure that he/she brings their device to/from school. It is very difficult for them to be involved at school without a device and currently we do not have extras.

10. Mrs. Petersons has been allowing students to choose a new book for their birthday. We have enough books to make sure every student gets a “Birthday Book” this year.

Parents/Guardians/Students/Staff:

The following are some reminders for the upcoming week:

1. COHORT B HAS SCHOOL ON MONDAY (tomorrow), Wednesday, and Friday. Cohort A attends school on Tuesday and Thursday (hybrid calendar attached).
2. Click to see Allentown PTO – 20-21 Meeting Schedule.
3. The new dismissal process is allowing us to get through dismissal quicker. If you have a student in Kindergarten that is a walker, we are going to try a new way to get them to the walker pick-up area, so parents don’t have to walk over to the car pick-up area.
4. We are planning to begin assigning devices. Please make sure your student has turned-in their device agreement.
5. We are trying to have students outside as much as possible so please help you student dress appropriately for cooler weather.
6. If you want your child to have a meal for the day that they are at home, please tell them to take a lunch when they leave each day. Bagged meals are located at the exit every day. We make announcements and encourage students to take a meal if they want/need it, but we can’t force any student to take a bag.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me or Sarah Petersons.

Have a great week!

Shannon Kruger

Message From Mrs. Kruger 9/13/20

Good Evening AES Families,

It was great to see the students back in the building and they have been amazing. I think they exceeded everyone’s expectations at how easily they acclimated to the protocols that are in place to help keep everyone safe. The hybrid model made our school opening manageable and it allowed staff, students, and administration to problem solve and adjust routines and practices. Staff are taking advantage of the nice weather and using the big trees and the tents we have to get students outside as much as possible for classes and breaks.

Thank you for all your support and helping your student return to school and learning.

Shannon Kruger, ASD Principal

News and reminders (make sure to read #6 if you pick up your student at the end of the day)

1. The hybrid schedule for this week is:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday – Cohort A attends school

Wednesday and Friday – Cohort B attends school

2. School Board Meeting – 6:00 pm on Monday, 9/14 at ARD

3. PTO will be holding a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, 9/15 at 6:00 pm. The PTO will be sending out the link.

4. All students under the age of 18 are eligible for free lunch until 12/31/20 or until funding runs out.

5. Device Agreements are due and all students have been given a copy for parent signature. A device will only be assigned to a student that has a device agreement on record. I have attached the form.

6. IMPORTANT CHANGES TO DISMISSAL BEGINNING 9/14. If you pick up your student please read and be prepared for the changes.

    • Once the buses exit the loop, car pick up parents can begin pulling into the big loop to pick up students. We think that using the bigger loop will allow us to get more cars in the loop, load students more quickly and get families on their way. It will also allow us to separate vehicles from walking parents/students.

    • All walkers and parents that come to the walker pick-up area will continue to go to the small loop. Parents are still welcome to park and walk to the small loop to meet their child and then return to their parked car. Children in both areas will line-up by grade level. We already began the grade level lines and this helps add some order to the students instead of just one big group. If the weather is bad, we will have the use of the awning in the front of the building and the gymnasium where students can be distanced and stay dry.

    • We don’t know if this will work, but it is worth a try to see if we can expedite afternoon dismissal and increase the level of safety between students and vehicles.

REMEMBER…COHORT A has school tomorrow (Monday).
