Dear Parent/Guardian,

Trimester 1 report cards are being made available today in Alma. As a reminder, report cards are no longer printed by the school (with the exception of homes that do not have internet). In addition to this email, you should receive an email from Alma.

As you review the report card, please keep in mind that you will be able to see the competencies and work study practices that have been taught in Trimester 1. Since learning is fluid, students are expected to achieve at a lower level when they begin to learn a skill/competency. If something is introduced towards the end of the trimester students may not have assessed enough to demonstrate at a proficiency level of 3 or 4 and a 4 is always very hard to achieve. Something else that is different in competency based education is that a Trimester does not indicate a start and an end to material taught. Now that teaching and learning in ongoing and assessed over the year. Because of this circumstance, Students proficiency levels are not final until the end of the year. Think of Trimester 1 and 2 more as progress reports towards the year end grades and achievement.

The ARD Leadership Team has concluded that there will be no honor roll in T1. We are just not able to configure that based on the above. We will have an honor roll for Trimester 2 and it will be based on earning 3’s and 4’s in work study practices. There will be an academic honor roll in June for the year (specifics will be presented to students and shared with parents on 12/17). The ARD Leadership Team will reassess at that time, but we anticipate a work study practice honor roll for T1 and T2 and an academic honor roll in June in the 19-20 school year.

Shifting to competency based education has been exciting and we have all worked very hard to get to this point. Please know that the work is not done and staff continues to meet weekly on assessment mapping and curriculum improvements.

Below are resources to assist you to better understand competency based education or to use as a guide when you review the report card. The videos and newsletters are produced by Chris Motika, SAU 53 Curriculum and Instruction Director and very informative.

We truly believe that competencies will give you a much deeper view into your student and their learning. Should you have any questions, please email the teacher directly as they can best answer your questions.
